Katherine Gunnell

July 13, 1938 — March 16, 2018

Katherine Smith Gunnell, beloved mother to Scott, Larry, Robin and Nick Gunnell passed away peacefully in her home on March 16, 2018 surrounded by her family. Katherine (known as "Pug") to all her close friends and family was born on July 13, 1938 to the late Della Johnson and Chester Smith, and was raised in the beautiful mountains of Skull Holler in Weeksbury, Kentucky. Katherine moved to Florida when her boys were young, and has lived in Fern Park, Florida for many years. One of Katherine's greatest pleasures were trips returning back to her mountains for holidays and visits. She was an avid fan of bluegrass music and often said it reminded her of peaceful walks in the hills around her childhood home. Along with her four sons she is also survived by her daughter-in-laws, Peggy Gunnell and Jan Gunnell, her sisters, Madge Wells and Marge Gish and her brother, Jim Smith. Katherine was blessed with many nieces and nephews and was a grandmother to Jonathan Gunnell and Robin LaDon Gunnell, and great-grandmother to Amaya, Nathan, Chantz, Tealor, Mary Ann and Karma. The family will hold a graveside service on April 7th, 11:00 a.m. at Highland Memorial Gardens at 3329 East Semoran Blvd, Apopka, Florida. The family would like to thank all of those who helped care for her over the last few months.
