Charles Dealon Johnson, 97, of Orlando, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2015. He was born November 14, 1917 in Dexter, Georgia, the eldest of three boys. The family moved to Cocoa, Florida in 1922.
Dealon served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and 1936 and was stationed in Ashland, Alabama.
He was a citrus grove foreman/caretaker for R.D. Keene Citrus, Inc. from about 1940-1949. Next, he worked in the electrical and plumbing fields, becoming a licensed Master Plumber and eventually opening his business, West Orange Plumbing, Inc. After retiring young, he re-focused his interests towards his vegetable gardens, fruit and nut trees and beautiful camellias, roses and azaleas. He was written up in newspaper articles and featured on TV programs regarding his amazing success at gardening. Starting his first garden at age 8, he gardened until 94, when he stopped to take care of his wife. He also made Grandfather clocks.
Dealon was a loving husband and father who dedicated his life to his family. A great man on immense knowledge, he was hard-working, lived a simple life and was generous in sharing. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Berlie Mae, who died in 2013 after 77 years of marriage, also his parents, Charlie Augustus Johnson and Mattie Lelue (Wood) Johnson; brothers, Herschel Dudley Johnson and Thomas Arthur Johnson. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann Johnson Utley and E.J. Utley.
Funeral services for Dealon will be held graveside on Thursday, July 16, 11am at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha, Florida. The viewing will be Wednesday, July 15 from 6 to 7pm at Collison Carey Hand Funeral Home, 1148 E. Plant Street, Winter Garden, Florida who have been entrusted with the arrangements.
